Nigerian Soldiers Shut Sports Bars to Stop 2014 World Cup Attacks

Soldiers in a Nigerian state at the heart of an Islamist revolt shut down all venues preparing to screen live World Cup matches on Wednesday, saying they wanted to protect fans from militant attacks.

A spate of assaults on often ramshackle television viewing centres across Africa has raised fears militant groups could target supporters gathering to cheer on the global soccer contest.

"Our action is not to stop Nigerians ... in the state watching the World Cup. It is to protect their lives," said Brigadier-General Nicholas Rogers in Yola, the capital of Adamawa state, regularly hit by raids by Islamist sect Boko Haram.

Military Ends the Circulation of Major Nigerian Newspapers

The Nigerian military barred the distribution of major newspapers citing "grave security implications."
Among the newspapers were The Daily Trust, The Nation, Leadership and Guardian, which were stopped from circulation on Friday and Saturday across the country. On Sunday morning in Kano, vendors were still to receive their copies.

The military has said that sensitive material concerning security are being dispatched by some newspaper's vehicles across the country.

Punch newspaper reported online that soldiers stormed its distribution centres on Saturday, damaged newspapers, prevented vendors from accessing distribution vans and arrested drivers.

The director of defence information, Major General Chris Olukolade, said the clampdown followed an intelligence report that the vans were used to circulate dangerous weapons, Punch reported.

"Denying Nigerians access to news and information sows the seeds of rumours and distrust," said Sue Valentine of the New York-based watchdog, Committee to Protect Journalists, on Friday.

"While we recognize that Nigeria faces security threats, these can never effectively be addressed by media blackouts or persecution of journalists. We call on authorities to respect the vital role that media play in circulating information and holding government to account," CPJ's Africa programme coordinator said.
The presidency and the military said the move was not aimed at clamping down on press freedom.

President Goodluck Jonathan's aide, Doyin Okupe, said the action will be stopped as soon as certain issues are resolved by security personnel.

Newspaper proprietors and the Guild of Editors have condemned the action.

Former vice president, Atiku Abubakar, posted on Twitter: "By attacking the press, and arresting journalists, aren't we slowly edging back to the dark days of military dictatorship?"

In another post, he wrote: "We can't surrender the freedoms of democracy for the ambitions of one man or party. This press harassment must stop in Nigeria's interest."

"We don't have that sort of time to play with," coach Stephen Keshi told reporters after Saturday's 2-1 loss to the United States in Nigeria's last warm-up match before departing for Brazil.

Female Suicide Bomber Hits Nigerian Barracks - Witnesses Says

A female suicide bomber killed herself and a soldier outside an army barracks in Nigeria's northeastern city of Gombe on Sunday, the military said, as local leaders reported the death count from a string of earlier militant attacks had reached 110.

No one claimed responsibility for the blast or last week's assaults but Islamist group Boko Haram has set off bombs and killed thousands in its five-year-old bid to carve out an Islamist state in the region.

Soldiers stopped the woman as she tried to get into the barracks with explosives hidden under her robes, defence headquarters said in a statement.

The device went off, killing her and a soldier searching her, it added. "I heard a loud sound and then black smoke covering the place ... We saw soldiers moving bodies," Gombe trader Bello Kasuwankatako told Reuters.

My Wife’s Spiritual Manipulation Scares Me

He has abandoned me, though I still love him  —Wife

“she started behaving stangely a year after we got married.

“I remember trying to make love to her; instead of refusing me politely, she  hit  me with a pestle.

“Sometime in February 2013, I  checked  her wardrobe and  to my surprise, I found a  cellophane paper  with an inscription: “lover’s spiritual transformation,”  and a note with an  instruction, “By 1:00 am, strip yourself naked and call your husband’s name seven times.

“My lips went dry in utter shock. She has never related well with me since I told her about what I discovered in her wardrobe.

“ All I got for an answer whenever I asked her anything has been no.  I don’t know why this is happening to my marriage,” he said.

Yetunde, in her defence, said her husband left home and abandoned her.

“My husband once left home for months. I’m  not enjoying the care a wife should have.

“He was not there to care for me when hoodlums attacked me.

“ I thought we could settle our differences amicably, but since he has brought it to court, I’m  ready for a divorce, though I still love him.”

The judge, Philip Williams, appealed to them to tolerate each other and ordered them to attend a  marriage counselling.
